The Geopolitics of the Nile
I used demographic and historical data to design this map in Illustrator. The graphic traces the sources of conflict that stem from control over the Nile and the creation of dams along it. In the spotlight sits Egypt and Ethiopia, with contrasting data about the water control and hydropower usage per country. The two countries are currently engaged in a clash over Ethiopia's Grand Renaissance Dam. Currently under construction, the dam is poised to unlock the economic potential of the Nile, in the country it spring from. But Egypt invokes colonial-era treaties to call for control over the body of water that flows through 11 countries.
